The Lynchburg Food Initiative: Food Deserts in Southern Virginia

Updated: Oct 5, 2020

A quantitative survey looking into the impact of food availability in a food desert town in southern Virginia.

The Lynchburg Food Initiative has sought out to determine which areas in the Lynchburg area are experiencing a scarcity in food options. Surveys were sent out to different regions and communities in Lynchburg to get the people’s perspective on what options are needed the most. Based off the results, the Lynchburg Food Initiative can now determine the next action to be taken to reach a solution.

"When working with the surveys and creating them, one thing we have to watch out for is bias. When also analyzing the surveys and interpreting them, we have to also watch out for bias."

Survey Results

An excerpt from the final Survey results:

"When asked where they usually shop most, about 50 percent of respondents chose both Food Lion and Walmart. The most important reasons why they shop at these stores was also determined by its closeness and low cost, which both came out to 50 percent of responses. However, it was unexpected to see such a significant percentage of people who chose the quality of the food as being an important reason, 35 percent. Transportation was an important aspect to see if people in the Lynchburg community had access to going to other places for food. The results show that more than 50 percent of respondents used their own personal car to shop for groceries, but results also show that about 40 of respondents rely on getting a ride from someone. And based off of zip codes, it was expected for there to be a lower percentage of the respondents to have a personal car."
